Memory and Aging -
Declines in memory for the events of our lives are a normal part of healthy aging. It is not widely understood by the public at large (1) that memory declines are not across-the-board, (2) that these declines are concentrated within a narrow set of abilities that is often called “verbatim” memory, and (3) some of the most important memory abilities are spared even in the 9th and 10th decades of life. More extensive memory declines are the main diagnostic symptoms of the two most common forms of cognitive impairment in older adults: (1) mild cognitive impairment and (2) Alzheimer’s dementia.
