Thursday, November 20, 2014 at 5:00pm to 7:00pm

Milstein Hall, Abby and Howard Milstein Auditorium

Sherman Cochran (Hu Shih Professor Emeritus of Chinese History) " - The Greatest Cornellian: Hu Shih, Class of 1914"

Who is the greatest Cornellian? Ruth Bader Ginsburg? Thomas Pynchon? Ed Marinaro? Which is your personal favorite? Sherman Cochran, the Hu Shih Professor of Chinese History Emeritus at Cornell, has as his candidate the man named in his chaired professorship, Hu Shih (1891 - 1962), who graduated from Cornell one hundred years ago. To show this Chinese alumnus' greatness, Cochran will cite his accomplishments as a brilliant philosopher, trenchant critic, influential language reformer, and international diplomat. As evidence that Hu Shih was a true Cornellian, Cochran will describe his profound intellectual and personal awakenings during his undergraduate days in Ithaca and his deep loyalty to his fellow classmates and his alma mater throughout the rest of his life.

Reception to follow at the Baker Portico in the Physical Sciences Building
