Cornell Club of Hawaii - Harvard Club Brownbagger - Medical Ethics and End of Life

Thursday, September 19, 2013 at 12:00pm to 12:00pm

Honolulu, HI Honolulu, HI, Honolulu, Hawaii

Please invite your alumni to join us on Thursday, Sept. 19th, for a talk on ethical issues surrounding end-of-life care by a prominent medical ethicist. The informal discussion will explore such sensitive and controversial matters as advanced directives (living wills), futile treatment, surrogate decision-making, even physician-assisted suicide.
Arguably nobody in Hawaii is as qualified to discuss such issues as our speaker, "S.Y." Tan. He studied medicine at McGill and Yale, and is board certified in internal medicine and endocrinology.
He is also an attorney, having graduated from the University of Hawaii’s William S. Richardson School of Law, where he served on Law Review.
Prior to his retirement in 2010, he treated patients with endocrine disorders and was a full professor of medicine and adjunct professor of law at the University of Hawaii.
Currently an emeritus professor, he continues to direct The St. Francis International Center for Healthcare Ethics since its founding in 1987.
"S. Y." has written over 100 peer-reviewed articles and lectures widely on medical, medico-legal and bioethical topics.
He has won many teaching and career awards.
His published books include the 2006 text “Medical Malpractice: Understanding the Law, Managing the Risk,” and the 2012 Halsbury legal treatise “Medical Negligence and Professional Misconduct in Singapore”.
Let me know soon if you'll join us. I expect a sizable crowd. Your guests are welcome, as always.
