A lecture for the Global Finance Initiative and the East Asia Program Speaker Series. Based on ethnographic studies in public hospitals in four Chinese cities in 2011-2013, this project examines the institutional and cultural factors behind the practice of unofficial payments for hospital care in urban China. Cheris Chan is an Associate Professor of Sociology at UHK and the author of Marketing Death: Culture and the Making of a Life Insurance Market in China (2012; Oxford University Press).
